Observation details
There were adults and offspring on four prairie dog mounds. What we perceived to be one family group occupied two mounds about 10 meters apart - each mound had one adult, with three offspring on one and four on the other. One of the young from Mound 1 ran over and joined those on Mound 2. There was a second group associated with a mound across the far barbed wire fence, maybe 60 meters to the south; we counted seven birds there, including one adult perched on a fencepost. The third group was about 50 meters to the west; again we counted seven owls - one adult on a fencepost, and six other owls on the ground. I returned home to get my camera, but most of the young had gone into the burrows by the time I returned at 8:40 PM. I have posted some photos of the available owls.
