Observation details
This is generally a rare species on Oahu, but it's regular within this portion of the Waianae Range. We first heard one bird vocalizing and, while trying to locate it, a separate adult male appeared. The male, mostly dark with a bright red mask around the eye, crossed the trail ahead of us while the first unseen bird continued to vocalize (a weird, gurgled clucking sound). The male was told from a dark-morph Ring-necked Pheasant by its long crest, gray belly streaking, and broad grackle-like tail, though those dark-morph Ring-necked Pheasant also aren't known to be here anyway. Fun to finally see one of these on Oahu.
