Observation details

I found this gull on the beach off parking lots 1 and 2. From a distance I saw this rather large pale gull standing on the shore with a group of CAGU near the lifeguard tower. Fortunately it allowed for a rather close approach. I believe this gull is a hybrid of some kind. It was a bit larger than the nearby CAGU, as evidenced by the photos. It had pink legs, and a pink bill with a dark tip. The eye was dark. The head, chest and back were a pure white. The belly appeared to have some brown with some darker brown splotches. The vent area appeared white, and there was brown barring on the undertail. When the bird flapped its wings I could see the tail was white at the base and dark on the outer 3/4 or so of the tail. The outer primaries were dark. The secondaries were dark at the tip. The coverts were dark at the top of the wing. The rest of the wing was white. The shoulder had a little brown when the wings were folded. Appears to be a pale washed out and bleached juvenile Herring Gull.
