Observation details
1st Ketchikan record - observed briefly with Greater Yellowlegs at the small bay at the north end of the runway. The yellowlegs were quite agitated, and when I tried to get closer for photos, they all flushed and headed north up the shoreline. I identified the sandpiper by its size (slightly larger than a Western Sandpiper), black legs, slightly curved black bill with a dull reddish base to the lower mandible, reddish-brown crown, auriculars, and back, buff-edged scapulars (faded?), white underparts, and crisp black streaking through the crown, face, chest, and flanks. The bird's white rump was obvious in flight, and it called frequently - a distinctive, high, thin, metallic "zzzzt", quite unlike the regularly occurring sandpipers.
