Observation details
Amos Hershberger’s great find Friday continues. Reached the lake’s edge by taking the cut in the hedgerow, arriving before 5:15am. Despite carefully scanning the lake with my scope several times, I was unable to locate the FRGU, so I walked along the shore toward the dam for approximately .22 miles and began scoping the lake from there. Located the FRGU on the water near dam, close to the far shore. Enjoyed good but distant scope views and managed 1-2 terrible photos before it took off at about 5:35am, flying due west, pausing briefly twice to feed by skimming the surface of the water. Comparatively small gull in non-breeding plumage with well defined, rear black cap, gray back, white nape, white below, pronounced eye arcs, and small bill. In flight I could see the pale short, slender wings with rounded tips, prominent white band on secondaries, black primary tips, and pale underwings. Poor, distant photos. See Ross Gallardy’s excellent photos taken yesterday morning.
