Photo 7 of 10. Northern Emerald Toucanet eating a bird (and losing their balance)!
Observation details
Our group encountered an adult busily dismantling a Clay- colored Thrush (species determined by our guide, Carlos Bethancourt). This was happening right beside the road. We watched for about 45 minutes while the Toucanet struggled to eat the bird. As we watched, bees and wasps began arriving, presumably to get their share of the meat. Some of the attempts were quite comical; at least once the Toucanet lost its balance while trying to pull flesh off the thrush. We also observed 2 juvenile birds in nearby trees. We assumed that the adult would eventually feed the fledglings some of the spoils, but we did not stay around long enough to find out.
