Observation details
My brother Jim Eldridge reports: I first saw the adults on Wed April 24 flying around Jesse James Park Amphitheater area. On May 3rd I discovered the hole in the ceiling over the stage. I watched the male kestrel bring food to the female and she would carry it up thru the hole to waiting nestlings. The parents would sit at various places on the Amphitheater and around it on lighting towers. They claimed the entire territory and would not let any other birds even land on the grass. On Friday May 24 I observed one fledgling sitting on a lighting tower with the female. On Saturday May 25 I observed 3 fledglings out of the nest. They perched on the floor, on various parts of the Amphitheater roof, on the lighting towers, etc. On Sunday May 26, there were 4 fledglings with the 2 adults. Now in this first week of June, the family of 6 continue to claim the Amphitheater as their home territory. Even after the first concert of the year on June 1, they sit chattering in the cottonwoods on the west side and continue to perch on the lighting towers and roof. Unfortunately, all of my pictures are from my cell phone and not the best quality. I am glad the kestrels were able to complete a successful hatch from the hole in the ceiling that will probably be repaired before next year nesting.
