Observation details
Pale gape apparent on two birds, plus one adult-type. Overall brown bird with domed head, black tail, and peachy belly. Head dark and rather unpatterned, throat fairly dingy. Observed at close range several times, got recording. Repeatedly gave clear “keeer” call and occasional peeping notes. Observed tail flicking. Got poor digi-scoped photos of one adult and one fledgling. Observed in “elbow” of SE1 on the quad side. While I observed for ~50 minutes, I saw the adult carrying food near a fledgling’s location, the adult drinking and bathing from a sprinkler, and the adult hovering over two fledglings on the pavement. Edit: While SAPH are considered rare in the Valley this time of year, it appears that there are several locations the species has been reported this month. In the Valley floor this month so far, there's one report from Kern county, one from Kings county (including ON breeding code), three from Stanislaus, five from San Joaquin, nine from Yolo, one from the El Dorado county foothills, and three from Placer.
