Observation details
Sub-adult bird associating with the Laughing Gulls around a shallow sandbar that was exposed at low tide just off the main sandbar. Noticeably smaller than Laughing Gull, paler back and wings with the upper side of the wings showing residual immature “M” markings but with dark inner primaries. Underwing also showed dark primaries. White below. Relatively small fine dark bill. Black hood with white crescents above, below and around the rear of the eye, dark legs. Initially identified as Bonaparte’s Gull but confirmed as Black-headed from review of photos (thanks Tina, Aidan and Greg).
