Observation details
Continuing adult in breeding plumage. [Kellen: We weren't expecting this, so it was super exciting to spot a gull circling over one of the western ponds. It was even more exciting to see that it had white spots on the black wingtips, and I was practically screaming when it circled directly over us along the east end of the ponds. A beautiful adult bird in breeding plumage, characterized by a solid, black hood; relatively slim, red bill; white crescents above and below the eye; and clean white underparts with a very subtle pinkish hue to the breast. This is a bird I've wanted to see for a very long time, especially in Hawaii! The bird was mostly seen in flight, though it did momentarily dip into the ponds a few times, and we lost it as it circled higher and higher to the east of the treatment plant ponds.]
