Observation details
Known breeding location. First seen at 7:13am. One pair moving from reed bed to reed bed, each time vanishing as they entered. Two juveniles seen - in the reed bed to the east of their nest. Two males seen independently in the reed beds along Rangeland, and one seen in flight from the west end of the pond in flight. I can't help suspecting that there are a number of others in there. While they utilize every reed bed on Huckleberry Pond from time to time, they are most easily seen from the path along Rangeland - I recommend standing at the large live oak and exercising patience and vigilance. PLEASE - no playback. They sort of creep up the reeds and take a quick look, extending their neck before flying to another spot. The first one in the photos was a lucky catch at the end - I'd actually begun to walk back to the car when I saw him fly into the edge of the reeds. When I went to check on him he was moving out to a more visible spot and evidently had his eyes on prey.
