Observation details
One 2nd calendar year and one winter adult. The immature bird had a black bill with a small yellow tip and in good light a small pale area at the base of the lower mandible. It was a white and dark bird with streaking on the head and some on the breast. The eye appeared dark, at least not white, and it had a dark "runny mascara" look around the eye. The mantle was intermixed with dark gray areas and some more first winter like patches of brown. The wings were long extending well past the tail and solid dark, I could not see any white in the folded wing. This was the first one we found and by the time Dane arrived we had lost it, we believe it flew out into the middle of the lake while trying to get photos of it. Shortly after Dane arrived, while we were trying to refind the bird, I ran across a winter adult Lesser Black-backed Gull!
