Observation details
Ragged plumage on what appears to be a young bird. Some black shading on head. Pronounced black bill with some droop—much larger bill than Franklin’s Gull. Very long wings. Dark gray mantle; white underparts; dark wingtips, and what appeared to be a white tail—until we reviewed our photos, which suggest a molt in progress with some dark tail feathers. Dark legs. Seen in flight and swimming until a boat passing too close prompted the bird to take flight. Observed with Vincent and Penny. Distant photos to follow.
