Wood Ducks
Observation details
This pond had high concentrations of Wood Ducks last year for several weeks. It seems to be repeating this year. They can be difficult to see as they climb up the bank out of the pond. When disturbed a little, they get into the water and become easier to see and count. They are unmistakable. They are a medium sized duck with a long drooping crest. The females have a unique white eye spot. The males are elegantly gaudy with a green head, white neck band and chin strap and reddish bill (at base) and red eye, with a brownish body, green wing tertials and a white vertical shoulder stripe.
