Observation details
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen two Red-shouldereds behind the house at the same time. The bird that we think is the male, because it is smaller in size, has reclaimed the territory behind our house from the immature red-tailed who took over a few weeks ago. The bird that we think is the female showed up this morning. She is larger, and she has a wide white band on her left leg with black lettering “F9“ arranged vertically with the F on the top. There is a metal band on her right leg and all we can make out is CAL126 – 1 and can’t see the rest. We are unsure if this is the same female that has lived in this territory for many years because that female was not banded. Both flew off for a few minutes and then returned with the male carrying a rodent. They attempted a food exchange on top of a dead branch but dropped the rodent into the wild roses. The female immediately dove into the roses and retrieved the prey. After carrying it up to a limb for a few moments, she flew off with it in the direction of where we think they usually nest.
