Observation details
Including one almost fully black-headed variant. I'm not really sure how such birds come to be (the information I could find was limited) but I do know that they are very rare. One theory I could find was that they are a genetic throwback to the Andean Duck (a very closely related bird that was once considered the same species, but was formally split). Interestingly, the Colombian population of Andean Ducks is somewhat intermediate between the two, with variable amounts of white on their cheeks. This 'Colombian' Andean Duck was thought to be a possible hybrid population back when the three were considered to be of the same species. Such birds are nearly identical to the duck I saw.
