Observation details
A fantastic find yesterday by Susan Hindinger. Today, it was both seen and heard at close range but tended to be elusive changing locations frequently and popping up elsewhere (akin to whack-a-mole) in the brushy old field habitat. It was observed often interacting with a territorial Field Sparrow. The subject sparrow (CCSP) had many features typical of other Spizella species in adult summer plumage: small conical bill, notched tail, plain (unmarked; not streaked) breast and belly, except for central breast spot in American Tree. The bird is identified as a CCSP by its distinctive head markings: gray sides of neck, brown ear coverts with thin dark margin, whitish supercilium and throat, distinct malar stripe, striped lateral crown stripes and whitish or light buffy median stripe. Song (recording below) is typically a low three part buzz.
