Observation details
Heard screech call well, recorded at 18:17 and 18:40. After talking to villagers with local guide Dominik Derek, it’s clear that this species is frequently heard and seen in this part of the island, and it even has its own name: “Baneha” which means ‘Flag.’ This confirms sightings by locals of birds “with heart-shaped faces” as this species after showing them pictures. Heard while interviewing villagers about Siau Scops Owl (“Mumeo”). Kelly et. al 2017 report hearing a Tyto sp. in 2016 by Lake Kapeta, but they left it unidentified. Dominik has seen and heard this bird in several places on the island before, and is sure that it is T. rosenbergii and not T. inexspectata based on facial disk color.
