Observation details
Biggest morning ever for me with this species- my previous high (also on eBird) is 375 on 23 May 2020 plus an additional 85 birds close by same morning on North Spit Coos Bay for a combined total of 460 in this same general location. First one today flew right by me on beach and actually circled around a bit- obviously foraging. It was almost dead wind wise with a slight east breeze and there were clouds of insects hatching which undoubtedly the swifts were snacking on as I could actively see them doing so as they headed north. This first swift was at 0642. I had the tall 15 foot foredune mostly blocking views to east but started to see a few others so turned around and headed back north so I could get better views above on foredune where trail dropped to beach. The first swift that buzzed me was all dark with long sickle-shaped wings and a long tail with distinct notch- an obvious Black Swift and a forbearer of what was to shortly come my way. It took me almost 20 minutes to hike back north and climb up on the foredune for great views at about 0700. Most birds were further east over pond and I would have missed them from the beach. So my first bird was at 0642 on the beach. I was behind the foredune and probably was missing birds but did see 5 more at 0652. Then 8 more at 0658. Then my foredune stationary count started at 0700: 28 @ 0702, 4 at 0703, 42 @ 0715, 30 more at 0718, 52 @ 0720, 55 @ 0722, 18 @ 0725, 17 @ 0726, 8 @ 0727, 15 @ 0728, 42 @ 0730, 34 @ 0732, 22 at 0733, 25 @ 0737, 13 @ 0739, 20 @ 0742, 19 @ 0744, 11 @ 0746, 35 @ 0753, 30 @ 0754, 21 @ 0757, and 3 @ 0814 (very high up).
