Observation details
Was amazed by this find in the field--perched halfway up a tree by the picnic area alongside Mountain Street, unmistakably a shrike with a chunky appearance, black mask and hooked beak, got a good look at it for about a minute until some yellow warblers chased it off. Assumed northern shrike based on location, but got home and looked at photos--thick black mask, proportionally large head, and clean white breast indicates loggerhead rather than northern shrike! Upon conversation with some other birders, appears that a loggerhead would be more expected this time of year than a northern shrike. What a thrill--please see attached photos.
