Observation details
While birding Cummings Memorial Park on the NY side of the lake a Black Tern joined a flock of approximately 60 Ring-billed Gulls as they were hawking a large hatch of mayflies over the grassy field immediately north of the park. The bird remained in the company of the gulls from approximately 9:00 AM until the gulls began departing the vicinity around noon. With the gulls gone, the tern began straying away from the immediate area eventually flying most of the way across the lake passing quite close to the small marina on the opposite shore. The attached photo was taken about 9:40 AM when the bird was over the aforementioned grassy field on the NY side of the lake, about 2 hours and 45 minutes before it strayed into Vermont airspace.
