Observation details

We went back and forth on these birds between lilac-crowned and red-crowned. The birds looked more like lilac-crowned, but Merlin identified the call notes as red-crowned, and from our evaluation they didn’t sound perfect for lilac-crowned. We ultimately posted photos to “What’s This Bird”, and the expert consensus was that it was not a red-crowned, and that it was likely either a lilac-crowned or possibly a hybrid. Given that we had two identical birds sitting next to each other, we feel a pair of pure lilac-crowned is more likely than a pair of hybrids, but we will post photos and audio recordings. Overall, green parrots with red on the forehead extending to just anterior to the eye, then transitioning to lilac, which completed the crown and extended down to the nape and sides of the neck. No yellow noted on cheek. Red secondary patch noted on wings.
