Observation details
Much discussion about this bird. Only later did we independently realize that all six of these photos represent the same individual. After questioning my initial identification as an adult female Calliope Hummingbird, I reached out for expert review. Sheri Williamson wrote: "Definitely not Calliope by gorget pattern and dark lore; R5 with no visible rufous and extensive green on undertail coverts suggestive of Anna's × Rufous." Apparently, though, the large amount of green on the tail and the undertail coverts is at the edge of variation for Rufous. Sheri followed by noting that "normal-length greater secondary coverts" rule out this being a hybrid. Mystery solved - it is a female Rufous.
