Observation details
1st state record found earlier today continues! (46.8801257, -119.9917850). Difficult to spot in tree, luckily periodically would give low trilling calls which tipped us off to its location. Heather eventually spotted it and we watched it for a while before I left, continuing to give occasional call series from same perch. Perch was about 35' high in Siberian Elm tree on a narrower than expected horizontal branch of 2-3". Near the perch were numerous horizontal branches. The overall impression of this bird was a slightly buffier Nighthawk with a smaller white patch on the primaries than on a Common Nighthawk. The placement was also different in being just past the end of the tertials exposing buffy markings between the tertials and the white bar versus the white bar being well before the end of the tertials and showing black on a Common Nighthawk. The highlight was watching it puff out its white throat collar and do a fairly long Eastern Screech-Owl type multiple times. The sun was behind the hills at this point which may have been why it was so active. Sunset was 8:47 pm and the bird flew off its roost about 8:55 pm showing much more rounded wings.
