Observation details
Cracking worn 1st cycle giving point blank views. A few new covert feathers but the spread wing shot shows that it has still not dropped or replaced any of its 1st cycle primaries or secondaries, so it is still in its 1st cycle. Different from the bird Chris Dean had last week on the river at Downey. Like previous late spring birds here where you can study at close range, it has a paling eye and some of the 2nd gen scaps are quite worn and pale. The fine streaking across the crown and auriculars and generally small slim bill fits graellsii rather than a Heuglin's type. This species has been very rare at this location this year compared to previous years and also considering the large numbers along the river this past winter - only my 2nd bird here this year.
