Lifer!! awesome find. Thanks to merlin. was at pond NW, listening to red eyed vireo song, and about to head down when merlin picked out its song, two note pwit sip! that kind of stood out from the vireo song, in that it was more higher pitched and more powerful sounding, I listened carefully and heard it again, was not part of the vireo song, and was coming from my north, somewhere towards the creek. so I went down to the newtown east bank creek crossing area, heard it calling again to my north, easier to hear than some other empid calls which are more buzzy - initially waded north in the stream, but heard it coming from the high trees on west bank, so I went back south to creek crossing and went on west bank, then headed north around 20-30m along the trail, before hearing it close. saw some chickadees moving high on the tree, then suddenly saw an empid pop out on medium canopy in the open - got camera immediatley to take photos, then saw and heard it call pwit sip!, confirmed!! took photos for around 30 sec, waiting for it to turn its head down but it mostly stayed up high, calling 4-5 times. then I got bins to try to look, but it disappeard, so I got merlin to record, surprisingly it sounded even closer, I realized it was directly on top of me, only recorded that one call (audio recording) up close before I saw it dashing south, to lower thickets with some other bird chasing it apparently, about 10m away. I walked slowly that way, then saw it dashing across the path again (going west since I was heading south) to branches not high on the other side of the path, continued that way, but before I saw it fully saw it dash into the distance to the west into the forest up the hill to the west interior forest, and heard it faintly calling there later, but it won't come out anymore, way too far. very exciting encounter!
