Observation details
1000 Black Scoters in one large flock was approximated by counting 50 as a grouping - using a spotting scope. Part of the flock was close to shore feeding until a harbour seal appeared. The flock 'scrambled' slightly off shore into one large circular flock. A Common Loon in breeding plumage surfaced in the middle of the scoter flock - raising its wings and chest - only to dive below the surface. The scoter flock fled on water creating a donut-shaped configuration. See photos. The seal appeared again near shore keeping the scoters slightly offshore in their donut-shaped flock. The loon did not reappear.
