Observation details
Adult male and about 13 recently fledged young on the trail near the east side of the Cottonwood / Willow grove around the spring. I first saw the adult hunkered down on the ground. It took a few seconds before I noticed the young bunched behind it. The adult then stood and walked a short distance away, bobbing and stomping feet in a distraction attempt. I backed away out of sight, birding near the spring for 15 minutes, then returned. They were all gone. I didn't hear any calls, or the following morning. I was somewhat surprised to see Mountain Quail with a large brood in this desert like habitat, but from the records see that they have been observed here many times.
