fairly quiet cut with Philadelphia Vireo singing throughout, with a more simple song than Red-eyed, basically alternating between two phrases: one simpler, one more complex. It gives at least one chattery call note,
Observation details
**rare in spring and I think my first spring Philly for Suffolk Co. (priors on Plum I); initially noticed by song, since it was a bit slower than typical and much simpler than Red-eyed. It gave a clear two-noted phrase followed by a more complex 3-4 note phrase and then alternated only between those two phrases while singing. The longer it went on and remained this simple the more sure I was that it was a Philadelphia. After about a minute I got a quick look at a small, small-billed vireo with a dark eye line and yellowish breast to confirm the ID. Later, while watching it with Paul, it popped out in a cherry tree and gave excellent looks. The structure was like a Warbling vireo but the bill was smaller. The eye line was dark grayish and extended from behind the eye, through the eye, and into the lores. The supercilum was prominent but there was no strong lateral crown stripe as in Red-eyed. It had a medium yellow breast, quite bright in the center of the upper breast. It moved slowly while singing and one was seen to eat a small caterpillar. I think the audio is diagnostic and the first cut also includes some call series that do not match Red-eyed.
