Observation details
Floating on a piece of driftwood over the water, slowly drifting west. First noticed it had a small, dark red bill, grey underparts and long primaries, overall darker than COTE, short legs. ID confirmed by Jean and Eric. Showed a strong preference for this piece of driftwood in particular, consistently returning to it after foraging flights, despite the wood moving a large distance through the early morning. Once the driftwood was out of sight, so was the tern. The tern later circled Whimbrel Point several times in the mid-morning, but was not seen again in the afternoon.
