drinking salt water from Fox Creek
Observation details
I watched a male take several sips from Fox Creek, only my second observation of a passerine drinking saltwater. The first was a family of Red crossbills drinking from a tide pool on a small island in the San Juan Islands (archipelago between Vancouver and Seattle). “Little is known about the influence of salinity on the distribution, physiological performance, and ecology of passerines; specifically, the impact of drinking water salinity on the oxidative status of birds has been largely ignored" (Sabat et al., 2017).
