Observation details
Heard only the drumming, a loud, deep series of bassy drillbeats, and immediately thought "that can only be Pileated." I don't much trust Merlin with many identifications and I think the drumming of woodpeckers would be a dodgy area, given the different resonances of differently rotted tree trunks, etc. However, in this case I made a recording of the drumming, and Merlin indeed "thinks" it's a Pileated. Plenty of Red-bellieds around but it's difficult to imagine one of them generating this kind of tone.
