Observation details
Day 5. Male singing from same tree. I've been spending quite a bit of time monitoring this bird, wondering if there is more than one. The male appears to be alone. Given how infrequently CATO is reported in eastern Merced County, I will be surprised if this male attracts a mate no matter how much he sings. I keep expecting him to give up and move on, but given the fact that this species is "permanent resident, rarely moving even short distances away from nesting areas," it's possible that this bird got stranded here and doesn't know where else to go.
