Observation details
Foraging near dike. I noted that the tips of the black-centered scapulars were white with only a narrow black medial line breaking them. The lateral edges of these feathers was weakly colored rusty. The foreneck showed very small black spots but the breast sides showed scalloped or bar shaped black marks. Color on the underparts was reddish to the undertail coverts. A Short-billed Dowitcher had been reported here and claimed by many present, but I think this is that bird. A hendersoni Short-billed would have shown broad gold-buff fringing to the scapulars and an unmarked salmon reddish foreneck and obvious rounded spots at breast sides. This bird was not heard vocalizing. Given the bill length and structure, I think it was a male, which are often confused with Short-billed Dowitcher (females are more readily picked out by their long bill and body structure).
