Observation details
continuing rarity in same locations are previous sightings. Adults were silent today. I heard the sounds of begging chicks, and when I focused on that location, an adult bird climbed up from the cattails, perched briefly, so I could get a horrendous photo, and then it flew across the marsh. Soon after, a second adult flew across the marsh following the flight path of the first bird. I waited 30 minutes hoping for more sightings. I did not hear begging chicks or see adults again. Later, about 30 minutes later, I returned to that location and heard the begging chicks again. With tremendous luck, I could see 2 birds walking through the base of the cattails. One was obviously a chick with down feathers, the other bird vanished into the reeds too quickly to determine if it was sibling or an adult. Due to the dense vegetation, horrible photos, but bits of the bird can be seen.
