Observation details
Hopefully final update: Comfortable with a positive BTBW ID after spending more time (maybe a little too much time) reviewing similar recordings and learning about BTBW song variation. Birds of the World notes: "There is considerable song variation within and between individuals." Most songs end with one upward buzz, but I found examples of other BTBW recordings where the buzz is broken into two notes. This one is very similar: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/168417211 Other recordings are near-exact matches in terms of pace, timbre, and frequency range: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/9140 Original comments: Added to checklist after reviewing audio. Heard this (unfamiliar to me) song from a distance and started recording. Song can be heard at start of the recording and at the 8.5-second mark. Bird was singing from a dense wooded area near a creek. Never had a visual of the bird. After consulting The Warbler Guide, appears to be a Type A3 BTBW song: first section series of short, fast, slurred notes between 4-5kHz; second section buzzy rise in pitch between 5-7kHz. My only hesitation is the second section has two buzzy notes instead of one. I understand there can be quite a bit of variation in this song, so I'm assuming this two-note buzz is within that acceptable range of variation. Couldn't find an exact match in the Macaulay Library, but very similar to https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/344047991. My only other experience with this species was a silent BTBW seen at this same location in Fall of 2021: https://ebird.org/checklist/S95406168. Definitely open to feedback if I'm off-base here.
