Observation details
Previously reported prior day. Bird was heard singing well before arriving at the picnic area which is here: 37.495107, -121.981658. For the first 20 minutes or so, the bird was heard only, but then appeared in distant willows approx here: 37.494475, -121.982025. It eventually began a CW movement around the picnic area, appearing in both small oaks at the picnic area entrance, then in willows east of the picnic area, then back out into the marsh. Small gray songbird, a vireo by its incessantly repetitive song and non-tapered bill. Head, back, and scapulars gray. There may have been some olive on the back. Underparts including chin were whitish. Small amount of pale yellow wash to undertail coverts and/or vent area. Spectacles, ie - white lores connecting to white eyering, but not as bold as on Cassin's Vireo. Primaries, secondaries, tertials, and tail were dark with white edges. There was one apparent white wing bar. Bill seemed to be pinkish-gray. Legs were gray. The bird sang almost non-stop while I was there. The song was mostly typical of Bell's Vireo: two warbled phrases separated by a few seconds, with the first ending in a downward inflection and the second with a raising sound. Something like: 'cher-weedle-deedle-dee, (pause) cher-weedle-deedle-jer'. It also sang this song with only downward inflections which is what I recorded.
