Observation details
rare: started calling in nearby pine tree that was sadly obscured by other trees, so no photos. I immediately started sound recording, then 30 seconds later, it flew off. Merlin did not recognize the WWCR, but I was pretty sure it was a crossbill so I put it down as crossbill species for the time being. Once I had coverage, I texted the recording to some friends, who said it sounded more like a White-winged Crossbill than a Red Crossbill. One friend texted a friend, who in turn texted an expert, Miles Brengle, who said it was definitely a White-winged Crossbill. Sound recording attached. Coordinates are 42°51'50.4"N 72°06'57.6"W. Lifer!
