The circular smudge in front of the hawk's left wing is a fluffy feather drifting downward in the foreground.
Observation details
I heard crows making lots of noise, then looked out the window and saw this bird getting mobbed heavily on the ground outside Escondite Cottage, with a crow in its talons. A couple minutes later, as I was leaving my apartment and headed to work, I saw this bird perched in a nearby oak, above Comstock Circle, starting to pluck and eat the crow, still getting mobbed as more and more crows flew in to join. I could see that the unfortunate crow was full-size and fully feathered, including fully developed flight feathers when I saw its wings splayed out. I couldn't tell for sure whether it was an adult or fledgling, but my photos show a fleshy gape, confirming that it is a fledgling.
