Observation details
I was driving the Ash Valley Rd. with my windows down listening for Ash-throated Flycatcher when this bird flew down in the road about 60 yards in front of me. I stopped and got my bins on it. It was noticeably small, yet looked similar to a Mourning Dove. I realized it was a Common Ground Dove and grabbed my camera. After a couple shots, I moved in closer, which spooked it off. It landed on a nearby Juniper tree. I took a couple more shots and edged closer. It flew again. At this point I made a couple of phone calls. Since Jesse S. lived really closeby, I decided to stay in the vehicle until he arrived. After 5 mins, it flew into the road again but a Brewers Blackbird chased it off. It flew right over the top of my truck. Thats when I noticed the bright rufous underwings. Bird, very small, bright rufous underwings, pink bill with dark tip. Flew in a straight line with quick wing beats. The black markings on the coverts were small and not as round as a Mourning Dove. Although the photos show a scaled breast and nape, it was difficult to see in the binoculars. See photos
