Observation details
Continuing on the grass near the beer garden. Large goatsucker, with relatively large head. Dark gray-brown crown but no visible median stripe (like a whip). Because of its location in relatively long grass never had good looks at the tail. Bird's head and back were cryptic mix of rufous, black and gray with gray bordered by black spots as light braces across the back. Head, especially below the crown, nape, chest, flanks and what I could see of the tail appeared more rufous. I've never seen a chuck, but I have seen whips several times and the size of the bird, especially the size of the head relative to the body stood out. As I observed the bird a fly landed on it and crawled over its back and face, several times the bird moved its head to shake the fly off, otherwise it was still and silent. Photos.
