Observation details
Initially felt this bird was a potential hybrid, due to orange breast feathers surrounding standard rose pattern and the song seeming detached, like a Black-headed. However, having reviewed photos of confirmed hybrids, this one by contrast is missing any sign of scruffy orange on the head, neck, or back — pure black. Solid white upper tail coverts. Completely pinkish/pale bill. Seems more plausible as a first cycle male recently molted into first alternate but retaining some brown feathers in breast. I understand song is learned in grosbeaks, so I cannot use this as evidence of hybridization — presumably he is heavily influenced by the loads of Black-headed around him. Happy to be corrected.
