Observation details
Male in cottonwood over the used book store building. When we first arrived KLG heard a rich cardinalid song that was suggestive of a Summer Tanager but too complex, so likely a grosbeak. Late in our stay we heard the song again and wondered if it might not be a Rose-breasted Grosbeak because of the quality of the song (not as rollicking as a Black-headed's song, and lackjng the harsher notes). Then the bird started giving squeaky 'eek' notes that were perfect for Rose-breasted, and shortly thereafter we saw it low in a cottonwood right over the book store roof -- an obvious male Rose-breasted Grosbeak with bold black and white plumage and a bright rose-red triangle on the breast.
