Observation details
Peep observed foraging on mudflats of the tidal basin. Larger than Western Sandpipers it was foraging with. Had a plumber, heavier outline than the Westers. Dull yellow legs. Throate and breast covered with dense black streaks that terminated below in a crisp border against the clean white belly and undertail. Crown and auriculars with a rufous tint. Nape heavily streaked. Back and wing panel comprised of feathers with blackish centers and rufous edges. Regular in fall, almost unheard of in spring, and never in tidal salt marsh habitat.
