Observation details
First had it around 7:20 am shortly after arriving on streamside trail. I heard what I at first passed off as an odd Veery, then quickly realized it was a gray-cheeked type song. It was singing very softly (more like a whisper song) and upon closer listening I realized it was a Bicknell’s, with an upward inflection at the end. It then popped out and gave great views down low, singing softly and calling occasionally. Tried to get recording but it was singing too faintly. Others got better recordings / photos later on. Bird continued until at least late morning, only showing briefly and singing rarely in the dense understory between streamside trail and farm pond. In terms of visual markings, had the plain looking face of Gray-cheeked type thrushes, lacking buffy eye ring and lores of Swainson’s. I also noted that it had a rather orangish-yellowish lower mandible.
