Observation details
!!!! Second Dallas County eBird record, first in 17 years! County bird for me, patch bird obviously. We were birding along the trail east of the bridge at (32.7840889, -96.9251247) hoping to re-hear/find a Canada Warbler that had been singing when we heard a call of a flyover bird coming towards us. It sounded a lot like a grackle, but was much louder and sounded like it was coming from a bigger bird, a “bulkier” call if you will. My thought in my head was maybe it’s a monster grackle like a greater ani or something - the call didn’t sound like it could come from a normal GTGR but a 2x or 3x bird if that makes sense. The call was a single repeated low loud mechanical “k’chuck” like a double note YHBL call but smushed together so it sounded more like a single call note. We could hear it coming closer from the east moving west and I could see a silhouette through the trees and I was waiting for it to fly a bit further so I could see it through a decently large window in the canopy. As it was coming I mentioned to Nick on account of the call “huh this sounds interesting we should look at this” and as I got it in my binoculars I saw an obvious kingfisher with rowing buoyant wingbeats and large kingfisher bill with all brick red/orange underneath. I was stunned and said holy s**t that’s a Ringed Kingfisher. And immediately got crappy recordings which I will upload later tonight or tomorrow. Observation was no more than 15-20 seconds at 7:53 am. We moved up to the marsh by the entrance hoping maybe it would have stopped at a snag as it was moving that direction but we never found it. There are tons of lakes and ponds and creeks, and the west fork obviously, all off to the west that could attract it. And I guess there’s a chance that it will be or has been flying up and down the river so there could be a chance maybe this evening or afternoon of having it fly back down the river
