Observation details
First spotted by Susan Allerton the morning of May 17, 2024. We observed it standing on the western shore of Pastorius Reservoir under scrub willows surrounded by grass and reeds. Medium-sized heron with distinctive white breast and belly, dark blue/grey neck, outer wings (could not see wing linings), and back. Middle to lower portion of the back had a mauve color to it. Neck was long and slender when extended. When neck and head were extended, the transition of the neck to upper breast was marked by a sharp V pattern between the white breast and dark neck. When the neck and head were not extended, the dark neck color covered the top of the breast causing the white breast and dark neck transition looked curved and appeared to be located further down. Bill was dark at tip and lighter towards base, but too distant and too windy to clearly see color of bill at the base. Several photos included.
