Observation details
Locally seasonally uncommon. Aberrant sub-adult (3rd year?) plumage leading to confusion of ID. Dark mantled gull resembling California Gull with jet black eye, red and black gony spots on yellow bill and yellowish green legs. Slightly larger than Ring-billed Gulls (Lesser Black-backed Gulls and California Gulls are similar in size). Mantle color appeared to be too dark for California Gull. All black primaries missing the expected white mirror on p10 for Lesser Black-backed Gull at this age. Thin red orbital ring around eye. Black terminal band on tail.
