Observation details
Benson spotted our last murre of the day right off the breakwater. This was a large alcid that sat low in the water. My photos show the bill to be relatively long and slim for an alcid, that the crown was rounded, and that the body was rather elongate. The head, neck, and upperparts appeared rather blackish in the field. The breast was white, but I thought the throat was dark. I thought the bird sat sufficiently low in the water to obscure the flanks. Finally, the bill was black and the eyes were sufficiently dark as to lack contrast with the dark hood.
