Observation details
Continuing bird at this Stakeout site, very urban shopping corner. Spotted it flying around to the south side of the Halal Market and landing on first one building, just SE, then flying a short distance to the railing, upper balcony, above the "Precision Dance Company". The bird quietly perched there for the 15 min. duration of our stay, for photos. A beautiful, medium-sized hawk (like a chunky Cooper's Hawk), with blond-yellow head and light beige breast from throat to undertail coverts; mottled light and dark brown back and wings with darker brown primaries. Tail banded with five narrow brown bars alternating with pale ground color bands. Long, brown tail tip. Bill silvery blue and iris light brown. skin behind bill light orange and gape of bill same orangy color and soft looking - like a juvenile. Very thin brown line just above eye, widening to a brown eyeline behind eye. Legs dull whitish scales with brown edgings. No obvious signs of jesses, although perhaps a vague bumpy or pale look to scales at mid-leg. (For me, this site is suspiciously close to the huge Port of Los Angeles, to the SE, and the bird is rather tame; but the CBRC will need to make some determination on provenance). 5 photos.
